Easy Stoveless Backpacking Recipes - for Thru Hikers!
Here are a bunch of Stoveless backpacking recipes that are super easy!! This is a method of cooking while backpacking and thru hiking that I have been doing for almost a decade now! I loved it back then, and I still love it today! It's lighter weight, it's faster and more efficient, it's cheaper, and it's easier! I hope you enjoy
packitgourmet.com/ and use code "jupiterhikes15" for 15% off your order! This is valid until 4/26/24
Thank you packit for offering such a thing to my peoples! I think their meals are a great place to start with stoveless cooking, or if you want something easy and delicious!
Remember the secret to stoveless backpacking meals is by adding extras! I will never *just* eat couscous, I will add some kind of nuts, raisins or craisins, olive oil, or a tuna packet... it is those extras that take bland and boring meals, and makes them awesome! You can then take a meal you've already eaten, change it up very simply, and it's all new and fresh again!
Extras to consider: powder peanut butter, olive oil, raisins, craisins, nuts, chips, meats and proteins, cheese, tortillas, mayonnaise packets, or hot sauce!
The other secret to no-cook meals is to add less water than you think you need, at first. You can always add more later! But if you wind up with a very soupy mix, it's much harder to go back on that.
1. Beans & Rice
- 3oz Mexicali Rose Dehydrated Refried Beans (or Santa Fe Bean Company)
- 1oz Minute Instant Rice
- 1oz Olive Oil
- Fritos
(Add cheese, a protein, hot sauce, or pack out an avocado for the best trail meal ever!)
2. Couscous
- Near East brand couscous (pine nut is the best flavor)
- Raisins, (can never add too many!)
- Tuna packet in whatever flavor
- Sun Dried Tomatoes
- Olive Oil
(Sometimes I'll also add curry powder to this!)
3. Ramen Bomb
- Ramen
- Powder Mashed Potatoes (half a packet)
- Bacon Bits, Cheese, Hot Sauce
(It's better than you think!)
4. Oatmeal
- Two Instant Oatmeal Packets (or three!)
- Dried Fruit (raisins, craisins, pitted dates, etc)
- Nuts of any variety
- Carnation Breakfast Essentials (of any flavor)
(Try adding Coffee or Hot Chocolate to your Oatmeal as well!)
5. Hiker Trash Pizza
- Flat Bread, or Naan, or Bagels
- Cream Cheese
- Pepperoni!
(This is a great lunch or an easy and fun dinner!)
6. Peanut Butter & Banana Burrito
- Tortilla
- Peanut Butter
- Chopped up banana
- Chocolate Chips!
(there's a lot of ways you could take this further! But another great lunch item)
7. Pack out real food from town!
- Pizza in a gallon ziploc, frozen burritos that will thaw out while in your pack, sandwiches from Subway or premade at a grocery store, leftovers from that awesome restaurant in town... stuffed into your cold soak jar!
8. Buy a Dehydrator
- The possibilities are truly endless if you have a dehydrator. So that is the endgame of cold soaking and ultimately the best possible option. All of your favorite ever foods, could be cooked stoveless after some dehydrating!
So I think stoveless cooking is most beneficial for thru hikers, but it can be great for others as well! You don't have to be thru hiking the Pacific Crest Trail just to see the benefits.
- It weighs less, as my little peanut butter jar is only 1oz while fuel and stoves can weigh more than a pound!!
- It's easier and simpler, faster and more efficient. You'll be getting more miles in the day if that's what you want.
- It's cheaper and super budget friendly! No need for a fancy stove, no need to replace your fuel every week, save the money and go stoveless!
There are of course downsides through, and stoveless backpacking isn't for everybody. It's not the most social experience, and ultimately some people will just never enjoy it. You won't have as many options compared to stove users, but hey that's why I made this video. So it's not for everybody, but I hope all of this information has been helpful!

My Thru Hiking Plans for 2024!

Is this the year I finally thru hike the Continental Divide Trail and finish my triple crown? I've already done the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, so it seems like the most logical choice! Not yet! Instead I am hiking some other trails that are a bit shorter, but doing them back to back to back. Starting out in April with the 800 mile Hayduke trail, then in July hiking the 500 mile ...
Why I Don't Use Trekking Poles - But You Should!

More than 90% of thru hikers use trekking poles, but I don't. They are incredibly beneficial in so many different ways, and I think everyone ever should use them. They help to prevent injury, they allow you to hike faster, a lot of ultralight tents require them, and they make hiking feel easier! So why don't I use them? I was using the BRS stove for several years as a more casual backpacker, but last year during a 2-week thru hike it started acting up and was really erratic with fuel/flame control. I bought the amicus this year hoping to get something more durable and trustworthy, and it seems great so far. Definitely works better in wind - the BRS was always a struggle to light in even the slightest breeze, but the amicus lights no problem. I think it’s worth the investment and the bit of extra weight if you’re someone who cooks regularly on trips.

    - Use a poncho instead of a rain jacket. - You dont really need a towel, no matter how light it is. - If you have a lot of trees in the area, use a hammock, so you can save weight on a sleeping pad and on a tent aswell. its really comfortable for me, i sleep very well in those. - Try mesh clothes, in some cases they are great base layers.

On that diet how is that you’re still alive? Haha, just kidding, I eat virtually the same stuff when out on the trail! When in town I try to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can. I find the trick is not to order too much at a restaurant, if you’re stopping at one, (mmm cheeseburgers, pizza, etc.) so that you have room left over for at least some fruit/veg. If I’m too full to eat the healthy stuff I’ll carry it with me and eat most/all of it by the end of the day!

DAYUM I have a goretex northface jacket, shakedry I believe but maybe not? It's a $350 jacket.... Absolutely ridiculous, but it's the only one that isn't instant trash bag in humidity... That frog jacket is dope af for a fall or early spring hike as if it rains it will be dumb cold. But summer, we should promote undies and flopies only hiking, can't stop won't stop moving or else you get cold xD (I sweat more than the average human, like I could be walking normal in 75+ and will start sweating. 80+ Like dripping, my shirt is going to be soaked within 30-45 minutes of walking, NORMAL walking... My dad, uncle, grandpa on my dad's side, all sweat like crazy as well.. So I am a bit different q.q )
